Business Analyst

Northern Hardwoods, a producer of world-wide premium hardwoods, is hiring a Business Analyst to join their team in Atlantic Mine, Michigan.

As our Business Analyst, you’re the person who keeps the production plan tight and the improvement work moving. You build and maintain the production schedule (sawing, drying, planing, ripping), dig into data to find what’s slowing us down, and help teams turn good ideas into real, measurable wins. And because we like smart people who can flex, you also backfill our logistics position when needed.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $55,000 – $75,000 annual starting salary.
  • Health, dental, vision, life and short-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 4% employer matching contribution.
  • Paid vacation, paid sick time, and paid holidays.
  • Full-time Monday – Friday position with flexibility to occasionally work nights, weekends, and travel to other company locations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

  • Own the production schedule for sawing, drying, planing, and ripping—balancing inventory, capacity, and equipment availability.
  • Track production performance by compiling key data (materials used, output, and machine time).
  • Spot what’s slowing us down by analyzing processes/equipment for bottlenecks, waste, and inefficiencies.
  • Drive continuous improvement by implementing process improvement methodologies (g. Lean, Six Sigma, cause-mapping)—and measure results to make sure changes stick.
  • Turn data into clear direction by building dashboards/reports, identifying trends, and supporting root-cause decisions with solid analysis.
  • Lead improvement projects end-to-end (scope, timelines, deliverables, risk mitigation) and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Move us forward by communicating, training, and coaching teams on new processes and tools.
  • Become a power user of our lumber inventory system (LumberTrack) and help strengthen how we manage inventory.
  • Backfill logistics when needed to keep product moving and customers happy.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or related field OR significant manufacturing/industrial experience.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills—especially Excel (you’re comfortable with formulas, pivots, and building something useful).
  • You’re positive, cooperative, and respectful—and you’re also the type who notices details others miss.
  • You’re organized, manage time well, take initiative, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • You like collaborating across teams and you’re comfortable facilitating change (even when it’s a little messy at first).

  • Monitor control system reliability and process variability—and take action to eliminate shortcomings.
  • Optimize systems for yield and efficiencies (you see opportunity in every trend line).
  • Lead software upgrades to plant systems.

  • Develop and lead preventive maintenance and troubleshooting for hardware, software applications, and infrastructure—keeping performance, security, and reliability high.
  • Assess overall system health using diagnostics and system tools.
  • Support capital projects through software and PLC integration.
  • Review spare parts to maintain an adequate inventory of compatible parts and identify upgrade needs.
  • Develop/document maintenance and troubleshooting procedures that make the next fix faster and smarter.

  • You can configure and troubleshoot PLC-based systems and connected displays/HMIs.
  • You can create and review installation specs, blueprints, and PLC documentation, including piping & instrumentation diagrams, loop sheets, and logic diagrams.
  • You can support the network and computer systems tied to automated control systems.
  • Sawmill and boiler experience (high/low pressure) is a plus, not a requirement.
  • You diagnose problems, chase continuous improvement, communicate well, stay organized and self-directed, support the team, and lead with safety in mind always.
